‘We’re going to take the bragging rights’, Omalla Confident ahead of Mashemeji Derby

Posted on 28 May 2025

  • The second leg of the Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be played on Monday, June 2nd, at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
  • Omalla is confident that Gor Mahia will secure all three points in the much-anticipated clash.
  • He has scored four goals in Mashemeji Derby history so far and is eager to add to that tally.

Gor Mahia striker Benson Omalla has emphasized that the team cannot afford to drop any points in their remaining fixtures.

He confidently promised that they will secure all three points in the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby against archrivals AFC Leopards.

The eagerly awaited clash is set for Monday, June 2nd, and will be held outside Nairobi at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.

The encounter, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 11, was postponed due to the unavailability of a suitable venue.

The derby is one of three critical matches left for Gor Mahia this season, and victory is imperative if they are to remain in contention for the 2024/25 FKF Premier League title.

They are neck-and-neck in the title race with Kenya Police, who have two remaining fixtures and only need one win to clinch the championship.

Omalla, who rejoined the squad late in the season, expressed the urgency of winning every match from here on out.

He stressed the significance of claiming victory in the derby, not only for their title hopes but also to assert dominance over their rivals.

WE as the players, the Mashemeji Derby is a very big match to Kenya and also to us, the players. And in the situation we are in right now, we cannot afford to drop points or even lose any match if we want to win the league. We will work hard and give the fans bragging rights,” Omalla affirmed as they gear up for the clash

The 23-year-old forward also made an impassioned plea to the K’Ogalo fans to rally behind the team, insisting their presence in the stands provides crucial inspiration.

So I urge our fans to come in large numbers because we want your support. The moment we see the green and white colours in the stands, we will do our best and take the win,” he reiterated.

Since returning from Lebanese outfit Al-Safa FC, Omalla has only netted once in the top flight against Nairobi City Stars.

However, scoring against Ingwe in this second-leg encounter would be a monumental moment for him. So far, he has four goals in Mashemeji Derby history, and he’s eager to build on that tally.

Mashemeji Derby H2h record

The first leg of the 2024–2025 Mashemeji Derby also suffered multiple delays due to stadium issues. It was eventually played on March 30 at Nyayo Stadium and ended in a goalless stalemate.

The upcoming match will be the 97th meeting between these two Kenyan football powerhouses.

  • Gor Mahia: 33 wins
  • AFC Leopards: 28 wins
  • Draws: 35
