Shujaa & Morans stay perfect as KCB thump Uganda to revive quarterfinal hopes

Posted on 11 October 2025

  • The second day of Safari 7s 2025 kicked off on Saturday, October 11, at Nyayo National Stadium.
  • Kenya’s sevens teams, Shujaa and Morans, maintained their perfect winning streak, joined by Shogun Rugby and Zimbabwe, who have also won both of their matches so far.
  • KCB secured their first victory of the day and will next face Nyati, who also recorded their first win in the tournament.

The second day of the Safari 7s 2025 kicked off with thrilling matches on Saturday, as Kenya’s national sevens team, Shujaa, and the Kenya Morans both secured their second victories of the tournament, while KCB stunned the winless Uganda Rugby Cranes at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Just hours after concluding their Friday fixture on Saturday morning with a 55-0 thrashing of Uganda’s Walukuba, Shujaa started their second match on a high note.

Patrick Odongo got off the mark with his second try of the day, scoring the first in this encounter to give Shujaa a 7-0 lead following a successful conversion just three minutes in.

Nygel Amaitsa found his way onto the scoreboard after the UK Select side had dominated much of the possession.

Capitalizing on a defensive lapse from the opponents, Amaitsa sliced through their defenders to extend Kenya’s lead to 14-0 after he successfully converted his own try, sending Shujaa into halftime with a 14-0 advantage.

Shortly after the restart, the UK Select managed to get on the board, reducing the deficit to nine points after a surge down the left wing made it 14-5.

Another defensive slip-up allowed the UK side a chance, and they made it a tight finish by converting a try for a 14-12 scoreline, before they were subsequently reduced to six men.

Shujaa exploited their numerical advantage, with Floyd Wabwire, coming off the bench, delivering two quick tries that stretched the Kenya 7s side’s lead to 28-12.

The UK Select managed a last-minute try, but it was insufficient to secure the win as Shujaa clinched their second victory of the day.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National sevens’ second team, the Morans, were the first to break the deadlock just two minutes into their match.

John Okoth finished a well-worked play, surging through two Apache defenders to give the Kenyan side a 7-0 lead after a successful conversion.

Apache narrowed the deficit to two points after a relapse in the Morans’ defence, allowing Zak Chukwuemeka to power through for five points, making it 7-5 to Kenya.

Daniel Kipchirchir extended the Morans’ lead to 14-5 before Apache controlled possession for the remainder of the first half.

They managed to get back on the scoreboard with a second try from Ewan Kingdom, closing the gap to 14-10 at the break.

The second half was a tightly contested affair. With just two minutes remaining, Apache were reduced to six men after a player received a yellow card.

The Morans capitalized, extending their lead through Clinton Amukwachi, who shrugged off defenders to score, giving Kenya a 21-10 advantage after a successful conversion.

Rayvon Ambale sealed the Morans’ victory with another try, which he also converted, for a final score of 28-10 – their second win of the tournament.

Apache suffered their second loss, with a match against ReUnion awaiting them later in the day for the final group stage fixture.

Meanwhile, the SportPesa National Sevens Circuit champions, KCB Rugby, managed to pick up their first win of the tournament despite missing key players, smashing neighbours Uganda Cranes 40-12.

This dominant performance bounced them back from a 17-14 loss to Shogun in their opening match on Friday, keeping their hopes for the last eight alive.

They will face the Nyati University Select side in their final Pool B match.

Nyati themselves had a perfect start to the tournament, beating Uganda 24-12, but fell in their second match to Shogun Rugby 22-12.

They will now set their sights on the clash against The Bankers to determine if they can advance to the quarterfinals.

Uganda remains the only winless side in the group, while Shogun has already won both of its matches.
