Arsenal fan Piers Morgan claims the Gunners could secure the Premier League title as early as March.
Asked by talkSPORT whether he is confident that Mikel Arteta’s side will become champions this season, Morgan replied:
“100 per cent. Arsenal will win the Premier League. Liverpool are overrated. They’ve been very lucky, and look at the games we’ve had to play so far.”
“Arsenal have had by far the tougher start to the league, and look where we are. We are going to win the league. I wouldn’t be surprised if we win it by mid-March.”
Are Liverpool “overrated”?
If you look at things purely from a statistical point of view, there is some merit to what Morgan says about Arsenal’s biggest rivals.
Opta‘s ‘expected’ table has the reigning Premier League champions in 8th place after six games with an expected points total of 9.6. Arsenal, meanwhile, sit top on 11.6.
Based purely on performance, Arne Slot’s team has overperformed massively at the start of the season, while the Gunners are right where they should be.
Can Arsenal run away with the title?
Liverpool showed last season that you can build up a comfortable lead and secure top spot. They had the title wrapped up with 4 matches to spare.
You can’t rule out Arsenal being in the same position this campaign if things go in their favour, but securing the title in March is stretching credulity.
While the Gunners are heading in the right direction currently, that doesn’t mean that things will continue in the same vein for the rest of the campaign.
The last-gasp win against Newcastle on Sunday has certainly boosted confidence around the club, but there is a long way to go and there will be plenty of twists and turns over the coming months.
