FKF suspend football activities for 1 week following death of Raila Odinga – Kenya’s sports news, betting and casino updates

Posted on 16 October 2025

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has announced the suspension of all league matches across the country for the next seven days following the death of Former Prime Minister and Gor Mahia Patron Raila Amollo Odinga.

The move comes after President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning in honour of the late leader who died on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment in India.

In its statement, FKF noted that the decision was made to allow the football fraternity to join the rest of the nation in mourning the statesman who had a deep connection with Kenyan football.

“Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period.

We join the nation in mourning a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement read.

Reports from India indicate that the former Prime Minister suddenly collapsed during a normal morning walk.

Indian police sources confirmed that both an Indian police security officer and a Kenyan security officer were present at the time. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Which matches will be affected as FKF suspend football activities?

The suspension affects several key fixtures across the SportPesa League, National Super League, Division One, and Women’s Leagues.

Among the SportPesa League matches affected include Mara Sugar’s home fixture against Bidco United at Awendo Stadium and Kariobangi Sharks’ encounter with APS Bomet at Kasarani Annex, both originally scheduled for Saturday.

Sunday’s lineup had Kakamega Homeboyz hosting Ulinzi Stars at Bukhungu Stadium, Murang’a Seal welcoming Tusker at the SportPesa Arena, AFC Leopards taking on KCB at Kasarani Stadium and Shabana playing Mathare United at Gusii Stadium, all of which have now been postponed.

On Monday, record league champions Gor Mahia were to host Posta Rangers at Kasarani Stadium, a fixture that will also be rescheduled.

Prior to this announcement, FKF had already postponed Kenya Women Premier League matches to give Harambee Starlets adequate preparation time ahead of their WAFCON Qualifiers clash against The Gambia on October 24 at Nyayo Stadium.

These fixtures, including Zetech Sparks vs Ulinzi Starlets, Kenya Police Bullets vs Gideon Starlets, and Vihiga Queens vs Kisped Queens, will now take place on the weekend of November 1–2, 2025.

The football community, alongside the nation, continues to mourn the loss of a visionary leader who not only shaped the country’s political landscape but also stood firmly behind the growth and development of football in Kenya.

His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be remembered both on and off the pitch.
