Eastern Conference Dominance and a Shot at the Shield

Posted on 29 June 2025

The start of the season showed that the Columbus Crew and Inter Miami would control the Eastern Conference like they did last season. Philadelphia made it to the MLS Cup a few seasons ago but failed to repeat that success the past two seasons.

The Union has a youth system that has kept them in the top half of the league over the past few seasons. They aren’t known for spending big money on their DP spots thanks to the number of youth players they call up.

In the MLS, it isn’t the same pay-to-win model that we have seen in leagues across the world. Philadelphia has created a system that has allowed it to compete with the best of the league.

This year is no different, as the Union is in a prime position to take the Supporters’ Shield.

Capitalized on Poor Performance

In early May, Miami and Columbus hit a streak of poor form that sent them back in the standings, leaving a lane open for a team to take the top spot in the conference and the Supporters’ Shield.

Philadelphia took advantage of this open lane and claimed the top spot in the East after beating out FC Cincinnati, which has been toe to toe with them the entire way.

At the start of the season, Philadelphia made two trades that made this season’s success look unlikely. Jack McGlynn and Daniel Gazdag were big pieces for Philadelphia over the past few seasons.

Fans were shocked when Gazdag was sent to another Eastern Conference heavy hitter in Columbus. From afar, it was a shock to see Philadelphia send one of their better players to their direct competition for the Supporters’ Shield.

They have succeeded so far after these trades thanks to their development through their youth programs and selling players at a high value.

All Eyes on the Supporters Shield

In the major leagues across the world, the champion is determined by the team with the most points at the end of the season.

The MLS is decided through a playoff format that is similar to the other major American Leagues. The most points at the end of the season still earn that team hardware called the Supporters’ Shield.

Since Vancouver has fallen out of the top contenders for the Shield, it has become a four-team race to determine which team will claim the Shield.

Philadelphia claims the top spot currently with 40 points in the year, with San Diego and Cincinnati close behind them with 39 and Minnesota with 38 points.

Philadelphia might be the top team in the league currently, their falling behind wouldn’t be shocking considering the form the other contenders for the Shield have had. Once we enter July in a few days, it will be an all-out sprint for the Shield.

The Winner of the Shield isn’t always the winner of the MLS Cup. Last season, we saw Miami lose in the first round in what was a very strong Eastern Conference. Similar to this season, where we have seen a large group of teams in the East appear to be contenders.

A Supporters Shield would make Philadelphia fans happy with hardware, the only trophy that will make fans happy is seeing the MLS Cup finally in the City of Brotherly Love.
