Brilliant Beatrice Chebet storms to 5000m victory in Rome Diamond League

  • Beatrice Chebet won the 2025 Rome Diamond League 5000m title in breathtaking fashion, crossing the finishing line in 14:03.69.
  • The time that Chebet clocked was the second fastest in history and a new Kenyan national record.
  • Chebet was followed by followed by Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti.

Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebet produced a dominant display on Friday, June 6, 2025 to win the 5000m title at the 2025 Rome Diamond League in style.

Chebet won the coveted title in an impressive time of 14:03.69, which is the second fastest ever in history as well as a new Kenyan national record. The previous Kenyan national record of 14:05.20 was set by Faith Kipyegon in 2023.

The Rome Diamond League victory was the third one for Chebet this season. Her first outing in Xiamen saw her clinched the 5000m title in a meeting record time of 14:27.12.

She then went to run the second fastest 3000m ever at the Rabat Diamond League on May 25.

In Rabat, Chebet who ran the bigger part of the race alone, clocked 8:11.56 to miss the current world record of 8:06.11 that was set by Chinese athlete Wang Junxia in 1993.

Chebet, who has yet to suffer a defeat this year, was followed by Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who clocked 14:19.33 and 14:23.15 in that order.

The fourth position went to Freweyni’s compatriots Birke Haylom and Gudaf Tsegay, who clocked 14:24.20 and 14:24.86 respectively.

Chebet’s compatriot Timothy Cheruiyot registers 1500m podium position in Rome

In another race, the experienced Timothy Cheruiyot settled for a second position in the 1500m men’s category.

Cheruiyot, who won a gold medal for Kenya in the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships, clocked a season best time of 3:29.75.

French man Azeddine Habz ran a brilliant race to scope the title in 3:29.72, also a season best time for him, while the third position went to Morocco’s Anass Essayi, who crossed the finishing line in 3:30.74.

Meanwhile, the other Kenyans who took part in the race Reynold Cheruiyot and Brian Komen, settled for the sixth and eighth positions in that order.

Cheruiyot clocked 3:30.94 while Komen stopped the stop watch at 3:31.14, a season best time for both of them.

Finally, Chebet and other Kenyan runners are expected to turn their attentions to the upcoming Diamond League meetings and the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
