An extraordinary one in Ireland "cosmic event" that wasn’t (really) one – GEO

Posted on 19 September 2023

The matter is, shall we say, unusual in the entire Brotherhood of the world. However, it is definitely wobbly. On September 13, residents of the small town of Portmarnock, Ireland, north of Dublin, discovered an absolutely perfect crater on a local beach.

They argue that it is so absolutely perfect that it could only have been caused by the fall of an object from outside space. Amateur astronomers come running, as do regular people. Closely followed by the local branch of Virgin Media, which dedicated a short report to this rare event: It’s not every day that we receive a visit from a celestial object, even unannounced.

A really strange “cosmic event”

“It is a huge and mysterious crater that does not seem to belong to this world,” begins journalist Hanna Murphy in all seriousness. This certainty of a major discovery was conveyed to him by Dave Kennedy, a very amateur astronomer, who explains that a piece of rock found nearby has all the signs of a small meteorite that has passed through the atmosphere and ended up stranded in the sand.

⋙ There was already talk of this strange star, which is about to shine brighter, in the Middle Ages

Kennedy admits: He no longer knows the composition of the stone in question, but seems to have decided to have the ad hoc analyzes carried out. Of course, the world attracts the world, even more so when a television crew is present, and passers-by stop “in the hope that what they see is the result of a cosmic event that only happens once in a lifetime.”

Yes, but here it is…

Once in a lifetime nothing is less certain. However, it is possible that those truly responsible for this wondrous crater will never have the chance to be exposed to such light again. Because no meteorite chose Portmarnock as a holiday destination.

As can be seen from a tweet that has circulated widely in recent days among people who were undoubtedly very funny, the “cosmic” perfection of the hole in question was the work of young men armed with simple plastic toys but skilled at sand sculpture.

“The boys literally dug it up with children’s shovels the day before,” laughs the user after revealing this very absurd pot of roses. This hole will undoubtedly disappear with the next tide, it is the fate of all beach work. The report dedicated to him by Virgin Media will last forever.

Guys, I’m in shambles. The message from Virgin Media comes after reports of a hole on PortMarnnock Beach that “could be the aftermath of a cosmic event”. Some guys literally dug it with a kid’s shovel the day before
