Tottenham’s James Maddison Is the Rare Sparkle in a Forgettable Season

Posted on 5 May 2025

Tottenham Hotspur are well on their way towards a clash with Manchester United in the Europa League final, having won the first leg of their semifinal against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday, May 1.

The Spurs have lost 18 Premier League matches so far this season and only winning the Europa League can make their season barely tolerable.

Most of Tottenham’s players have been below par in the ongoing season, with James Maddison being a notable exception.

Maddison got snubbed by the English national team at Euro 2024 but keeps delivering for his club in his second season for them.

James Maddison’s Earlier Struggles

Maddison scored in the semifinal against Bodo/Glimt to take his season’s tally to 12 in 45 matches.

He has 10 assists to go along with it, which makes his returns for the season quite good, especially for a non-performing team.

However, it was not all good for him at the start of the season, as he lost his place in the playing XI to Dejan Kulusevski, who played as a No. 8.

He then partnered Kulusevski for a while as one of the two No. 8s but was overshadowed by the former in the first half of the season.

Improved Form, and a Chance at Victory

Maddison got his act together in the second half of the season and has probably been Tottenham’s best player during the last few months.

He now has proved his worth for his club after making a wonderful start only to get injured last season, which ruined his stats.

The 28-year-old has earned only seven caps for the Three Lions so far and will be facing stiff competition for adding to that tally, as England have a number of quality midfielders like Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden in their ranks.

Therefore, the viable option for him is to keep performing for his club at the moment.

Winning a European trophy should be a great achievement in his career.

Ange Postecoglou, the Tottenham manager, has been feeling the heat for quite some time now. However, Maddison is one player he probably cannot complain about.

The key battle for the Spurs will be to win the Europa League of course. However, they should also try to improve their position in the Premier League table from their current 16th.

It is not going to be an easy task though, as the 12th-placed Crystal Palace is eight points ahead of Tottenham’s tally at the moment.
