iOS 17: How to share an AirTag between multiple people – iGeneration

iOS 17 brings an AirTags sharing feature so that a tag can be used by multiple people, for example for luggage or a vehicle.

This is an option that AirTags has been missing since its launch in 2021: allowing multiple people to use the same tag in Find My. If you put one in your suitcase before you leave, everyone can find it. It could also be a vehicle that we rarely use and always forget where we parked it. In my case, my car contains two AirTags, but every time one of the two drivers takes it, the other’s AirTag starts ringing.

This sharing feature is offered with iOS 17. Up to 5 people can be linked to one AirTag (from your family or from external people).

However, the new feature is not accessible for “Children” accounts on your Family Sharing. In France, the holder of an Apple account is considered a child until the age of 15.

Share the AirTag

To share an AirTag, open Find My, select the item with a and tap Add Someone under Share This Item.

A short selection of your contacts will appear, but you can list them all by tapping the “+” button. This may be necessary because you need to select the address your contact uses with their iCloud account, rather than their phone number, which may be offered by default.

The other person will then receive a notification about their connection to the AirTag (which they can decline). If your invitation is accepted, that person will no longer receive notifications when they move with your beacon. She can use it just like you: query her location, search for it or call. Finally, it also works with third-party tags, like the extremely affordable iTags.
